Steamed Sweet Rice Cake with YUCa’s Tea Green Tea

Uirō(Steamed Sweet Rice Cake) is one of Japan’s traditional confections, and it is believed to have been introduced from China along with medicinal remedies in the 14th century. Originally, the term “Uirō” referred to a type of medicine, but over time, it also came to be used for the sweet. In Odawara, both the medicine and the confection are still known today as Uirō. Meanwhile, in Nagoya, the sweet became popular among common people during the Edo period (1603–1868) and developed a distinct local character. Today, many people across Japan associate Uirō most strongly with Nagoya. This confection is made by mixing rice flour or warabi (bracken) starch with sugar and water, then steaming it to create its signature chewy and springy texture. It is also known for its colorful appearance and wide variety of flavors, including matcha, brown sugar, and cherry blossom.

We would like to introduce a pairing of Uirō with YUCa’s Tea Green Tea (Fukamushi Sencha). While Uirō can be enjoyed at room temperature, chilling it slightly before eating enhances its chewy texture and gentle sweetness. The combination of Uirō’s subtle, comforting sweetness with the rich and mellow umami of deep-steamed sencha creates a soothing, refined moment of Japanese harmony — a perfect time to relax and unwind.
